About Black Dirt Crop Insurance Agency
Serving Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota Farmers since 1985
Agency History
Crop insurance has been a cornerstone of American agriculture since the 1930s. In 1985, Becky and Dwight Krueger purchased Tangen Insurance in Wahpeton ND, helping area producers navigate the evolving crop-insurance landscape.
Over four decades, Becky built lasting relationships and guided farmers through countless program and policy changes. In 2024, she sold the agency to her son Josh Krueger, who now continues the family legacy under the new name Black Dirt Crop Insurance – bringing modern tools, transparency, and the same trusted service that farmers have relied on for nearly 40 years.
Joshua Krueger Owner & Agent, Black Dirt Crop Insurance
Josh grew up around the business he now owns. His parents, Becky and Dwight Krueger, purchased Tangen Insurance in 1985, and Josh has lived in the Wahpeton-Breckenridge area ever since. In 2024, after 40 years of service to area producers, Becky sold the agency to Josh, marking a new chapter under the Black Dirt Crop Insurance name.
A graduate of North Dakota State University with a focus on math and statistics, Josh combines data analysis with deep agricultural understanding. Before taking over the agency, he worked as a licensed residential appraiser and insurance agent, gaining firsthand insight into how numbers and land come together.
Josh believes in transparency – treating crop insurance like a financial investment, not a guess. Using historical yield data, he builds personalized spreadsheets that show producers how different coverage levels would have performed over time. His goal is to help every farmer make confident, informed decisions.
Outside the office, Josh is active in the community. He coaches youth baseball, plays pickleball several times a week, cheers on the Minnesota Vikings, and supports St. Mary's School in Breckenridge, where his children attend.
"Our society is losing its connection with community," Josh says. "I want to help bring that back – one conversation and one farm at a time."
Becky Krueger Legacy of Service
For more than four decades, Becky Krueger helped farmers across the Red River Valley make confident, informed crop-insurance decisions.
Becky grew up on a small grain and dairy farm near Hillsboro ND, where she learned the value of hard work, family, and community. After earning her degree in Business Education from UND, she and her husband Dwight raised their family near Kent MN while building a respected reputation in local agriculture.
In 1985, Becky and Dwight purchased Tangen Insurance in Wahpeton ND, continuing a legacy that began shortly after the 1980 Crop Insurance Act. Through decades of change in federal programs and coverage options, Becky guided producers with a steady hand and genuine care.
Her 40 years of dedication laid the foundation that Black Dirt Crop Insurance stands on today – combining technical expertise, honest communication, and strong community relationships to serve the next generation of area farmers.
